The genus Pritchardia is native to Hawaii and other Pacific Islands. There are 29 known species of Pritchardia, with 19 species endemic to the Hawaiian Islands, and the rest appearing on other island chains. The Hawaiian name for Pritchardia is Loulu.
The Pritchardia arecina is the species native to the island of Maui. This palm is also commonly known as the Maui Palm, East Maui Palm and sometimes as Maui Loulu or Maui Pritchardia.
