Sugar is routinely made from Palms. The palm species has sap which is rich in sucrose. Widely produced across Africa and Asia, Palm Sugar was originally made from the sap of trees in the Borassus genus, commonly known as the Palmyra Palm, and also from Phoenix dactylifera, the Date Palm. In addition to Palmyra and Date Palms, today Palm Sugar is also produced from the Argena Pinnata or Arenga saccharifera, commonly known as the Sugar Palm; and Nypa fruticans, commonly known as the Nipa Palm. Coconut Sugar is also made from Cocos nucifera, the Coconut Palm.
