On Friday, April 7th, The Merwin Conservancy presents an evening with award-winning research plant geobiologist and best-selling author Hope Jahren, whose autobiographical novel Lab Girl debuted in 2016 on the New York Times best-seller list and has won widespread critical acclaim. Dr. Jahren is the guest of honor at the next installment of The Green Room, an environmental and literary salon series on Maui that is hosted by the Conservancy. The event begins at 7:00pm in the McCoy Theater at the Maui Arts & Cultural Center, with doors opening at 6:30pm. Tickets are now on sale, for $25 per person, with a $10 student rate available with valid student I.D..
Dr. Jahrenʻs groundbreaking research focuses on discovering the secrets hidden in fossilized plant life. She is considered a leader in her field; she is the recipient of three Fulbright Awards and is one of four scientists, and the only woman, to have been awarded both of the Young Investigator Medals given within the Earth Sciences. Jahren was profiled by Popular Science magazine in 2006 as one of its “Brilliant 10” scientists, was a 2013 Leopold Fellow at Stanford University‘s Stanford Woods Institute for the Environment. In 2016, Time Magazine named her one of the world’s “100 Most Influential People.”
She was a tenured professor at the University of Hawaii in Honolulu from 2008 to 2016, where she built the Isotope Geobiology Laboratories, with support from the National Science Foundation, the Department of Energy and the National Institutes of Health. She now holds the J. Tuzo Wilson professorship at the University of Oslo, Norway. In 2016, she released her best-selling and acclaimed memoir, Lab Girl, which is a hybrid of science writing and autobiography.
Dr. Jahren will make her April 7th appearance in The Green Room with an inspiring presentation followed by an intimate Q&A with the audience, and book signing at a courtyard reception with dessert, champagne, book fair, and live musical entertainment.
This evening is generously presented by FIM Group. Ticket proceeds benefit The Merwin Conservancy.
